AP Photo - De Niro was born in New York on August 17th, 1943 to artist parents, Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral, who divorced when Robert Jr. was just two. Having caught the acting bug early, he enrolled into a private drama school aged 13 but dropped out shortly afterwards. As a teenager, he became involved in Little Italy's street gangs, where he earned the nickname 'Bobby Milk' on account of his pale complexion. He didn't stay off the rails for long and was eventually accepted to study at New York's Stella Adler Conservatory, where he learnt method acting from the famous Lee Strasberg.
